Services

The A better way to work campaign ends on the 31st March 2012.

At A better way to work we help and support employees of businesses in and around Edinburgh try active and sustainable types of travel, such as walking, cycling, taking the bus or car trip sharing. This year we will offer a core group of companies a series of events and advice sessions tailored to suit the needs of each organisation. All of our services are provided free of charge to the companies taking part in A better way to work 2011/12.

Promoting sustainable travel: we can provide a wide range of resources and materials to help you promote sustainable travel within your organisation, from posters and guidance leaflets to email templates. We can hold awareness-raising events; and provide advice on the various employers’ schemes available, such as Cycle to Work and the Cycle Friendly Employers Award.

Travel surgeries: these short one-to-one sessions will allow us to provide employees with detailed, personalised travel planning advice. For those with shorter journeys, or who want to try active travel, we can offer route planning advice for walking and cycling; cycle tuition; bicycle loans; and free maps, pedometers and cycle computers. For people with longer journeys, limited mobility or for those who don't want to walk or cycle, we can provide journey planning information and free trial bus passes; along with advice on car sharing, car club membership and eco-driving.

Dr Bike: we will send a mobile mechanic to your workplace to service bikes cycled in on the day. Most minor problems can be fixed on the spot, with more major problems diagnosed and a bike “MOT” provided. Dr Bikes are used by many employers to promote regular cycling and to reward cyclists. It even tempts new cyclists to cycle in for the day just to get their bike serviced.

Cycle tuition: cycle tuition is provided on a one-to-one basis for new and returning cyclists, who are taught using a straightforward technique, structured and tailored to the needs of the individual. Lunchtime cycle rides or group commutes for more confident cyclists could also be arranged. For those returning to cycling or needing more confidence, we can show them ways to improve their roadcraft, enabling them to ride smoothly and assertively in heavy traffic.  We can also offer advice on appropriate clothing, lights, bike storage, bike security and luggage options. Each session usually lasts about an hour, and can be delivered anywhere in Edinburgh. Bikes can be borrowed for tuition free of charge.

Not sure what to expect on a lesson?  Here's an example of our cycle training in action:

Loan bicycles: we have a fleet of new, lightweight bikes available for loan for two weeks, completely free of charge. With various sizes and types of bike available, from town bikes to folding Bromptons and electric bikes, we have something to suit everyone –  all bikes come complete with a helmet, lock and lights. We can even lend you pannier bags if you need them for your commute. If you don't have a bicycle, and are not sure if cycling is for you, or if you have an old bike and want to try cycling on a different type of bike, then this is the perfect opportunity to give cycling a go.
