The Bike Station has been based in the community for over 20 years, with a credible reputation of
recycling, refurbishing and reusing donated bikes and making bikes available within the community.

 

In the last two years The Bike Station has developed its flagship community programme Shifting
Gears, tackling the inequity within community-based behaviour change programmes by working in
partnership with local agencies and providing free bikes, skills development and employment
opportunities.


The Bike Station continues to receive significant numbers of donated bikes, whilst also satisfying an
SLA with Perth and Kinross Council to collect bikes from recycling centres. The 2021 tonnage for bikes
saved from landfill was 67.17 tonnes.


Status:  5 days per week (35 hours) - (open to 4 days per week)
Salary: £23,920 (FTE) [plus 5% Employers Pension Contribution]

  • Deliver an effective, efficient and sustainable model for bike recycling, reuse and refurbishment and sales.

  • Enable our diverse communities to choose cycling by delivering on community-base activity; underpinned by engagement, involvement and empowerment.

  • Develop the capability, confidence and competence of our community, customers and partners.

  • Ensure a thriving, sustainable organisation which values and provides opportunity for its people, enabled by diverse income streams and good communication.

 

Funding
The role of Volunteer Coordinator is initially funded for 1 year continuation funding if outcomes are
met and the benefit to our organisation and activity is actualised.

 

Role Purpose
The Volunteer Coordinator will be responsible for the smooth running of the following volunteer
led-functions;

  • Warehouse activity

  • FYOB

  • Prison Project

 

The Volunteer Coordinator will recruit, induct and support volunteer positions across operations
within The Bike Station including, but not limited to, across our;

  • Upcycling and warehouse activities

  • Fix Your Own Bike sessions

  • Bike Sales

  • Prison Project

  • Communities programme

  • Commercial volunteering opportunities

 

As well as promoting safe working practices, providing on-going training and support to volunteers,
they will be responsible for publicising opportunities at events, online and in person by visiting
relevant agencies. They will manage relationships between volunteers, staff and Members as well as
external agencies, the Board and local community.

 

The Volunteer Coordinator is responsible for designing and organising a programme of volunteer led
activities in partnership with the Production Manager and staff team that meet the needs of our
organisation. They are responsible for ensuring that they and Volunteers adhere to organisational
policies and procedures and they promote the organisation and its volunteer accomplishments to
potential volunteers, policymakers and funders.


Volunteer Coordinator - Main Duties

  • Assess operational needs in partnership with the senior management team to determine the number and range of volunteers needed for particular projects and areas of activity

  • Consult with colleagues and update descriptions and offering for all volunteer positions

  • Oversee volunteer recruitment process by advertising for available volunteer positions, interviewing/assessing candidates, and matching them with appropriate roles/tasks.

  • Prepare orientation and induction materials for new volunteers, including handbooks and programmes

  • Work alongside colleagues who also support volunteers to ensure coordinated and smooth process and experience.

  • Make expectations of Volunteers clear and ensure successful delivery of our warehouse & upcycling operations, prison activity and FYOB sessions.

  • Ensure all volunteers adhere to health and safety requirements.

  • Deliver induction training and on-going training or assigns others to do so

 

Knowledge, Skills and Experience

  • Experience of recruiting, training, managing and supervising a diverse range of team members or volunteers.

  • Excellent up to date knowledge of bikes and bike mechanics ideally with an industry standard qualification (e.g. Velotech)

  • Excellent interpersonal and presentation skills including the ability to engage a range of audiences.

  • Excellent organisational skills, as well as excellent IT skills..

  • Experience of project evaluation and improving services through user feedback

  • The ability to work alone and as part of a team.

  • High level of planning and organisation skills

  • Experience of working in services which deliver positive outcomes.

  • Demonstrable understanding of safeguarding issues and the management of risk.

  • Self-motivated and can use own initiative to drive volunteering at The Bike Station forward
