Title: Community Mechanic

Status: Hours: 35 hours Fixed Term Contract until 31 st March 2026 (with the view to extend
dependent on funding)

Salary: £24,035 FTE

Purpose of the role:
The post-holder will have proven skill and experience as a mechanic, along with great
communication skills and interest in community based active travel programmes. You will be
responsible for assisting in the successful delivery of Kids Bike Life, working with schools, young people and their adults to encourage cycling in Edinburgh. You will work closely with the Community Outreach Officers, Communities Manager and CTRL’s on a range of Kids Bike Life activities throughout the year.
Key Responsibilities
● Build bikes for our communities bike referral and free to access programmes
● Service and maintain any returning bikes including cargo bikes
● Oversee the distribution of bikes to programme participants
● Deliver basic bike maintenance training and Dr Bike sessions through our Kids Bike Life project (also occasionally assist our Cycle Trainer Ride Leader to deliver cycle training sessions)
● Act as a mentor for any community based volunteering or work placements within The Bike
Station
● Assist in the building and refurbishing of bikes for general Bike Station sale
● Assist in the collection of evaluation data for all communities programme activity.
● Provide a safe and welcoming environment for participants when interacting with The Bike
Station
● Take reasonable care for the health and safety of participants in accordance with legislation, and
government guidelines
Essential Experience:
● Refurbishing & upcycling bikes
● Providing information, advice and guidance to young people and adults
● Experience delivering training
● Experience of working on own initiative, to organise and prioritise work
● Effective use of ICT within a learning environment, including familiarity with standard Gsuite and
Microsoft packages.
Desirable experience:
● Delivering training in a community setting, particularly Dr Bike or Cycle Training
● Work with marginalised communities
● Experience delivering Essential Cycling Skills and/or running led group rides
● Supporting young people and/ or adults to progress into work or training
● Cycle ride leader and/or Cycle trainer qualification
Skills
● Strong communication skills, both oral and written
● Ability to work with a wide range of people and communities
● Ability to work flexibly & adapt to changing community needs
● Excellent organisational skills
● Strong alignment with the values of The Bike Station and the ability to champion these to
different audiences
● Velotech/cytech bicycle mechanic qualifications or equivalent experience.
● Cargo bike experience and training
● Driving licence
