At The Bike Station, we’re proud to be part of leading the way in promoting sustainability through the principles of the circular economy. This isn’t just about recycling—it’s about rethinking the entire lifecycle of resources, from production to disposal, with a focus on reducing waste and maximizing the lifespan of materials.
In 2024, we recycled 6 tonnes of bicycle tyres and tubes—about the weight of 8 newborn grey whales—that would have otherwise ended up in landfill.
We also refurbished 2,387 bikes, giving them a new lease of life and empowering people to create new stories and memories on two wheels.
A principle of the circular economy is repairing and reuse - last year our mechanics serviced and repaired over 800 bikes, keeping them rolling and encouraging that repair culture that is so vital to a sustainable future.
Research by the Bike Club reveals that 34% of UK adults have one or more unused bikes, and 15% have unused kids' bikes. Imagine the impact if we could get more of those bikes back into circulation, reducing waste and supporting a circular, sustainable economy.
In Scotland, the Circularity Gap Report shows that only 1.3% of resources are cycled back into the economy after use—far below the sustainable level. At The Bike Station, we’re committed to changing this by embracing a more circular approach, focusing on reuse and repair rather than disposal.
As part of Scotland's movement toward a car-free lifestyle, cycling plays an essential role. In cities like Perth and Edinburgh, a significant percentage of residents want to drive less. However, barriers such as a lack of infrastructure and skills development opportunities prevent them from fully embracing cycling. That’s where we come in—offering affordable, refurbished bikes and repair services, making cycling more accessible to everyone.
