Everyday Heroes: Why Bikes — and the People Behind Them — Matter More Than Ever

In every city, town, and village, there are everyday heroes. They’re not wearing capes — they’re riding bikes.

They’re the parents teaching their children to balance for the first time. The commuters choosing pedals over petrol. The families finding joy, confidence, and connection through something as simple — and powerful — as a bike.

At The Bike Station, we see these heroes every day. We help them find freedom on two wheels, regardless of income, background, or ability.

The Power of Equitable Access

In a world where inequality and poverty are deepening, the cost of a bike — or even basic repairs — can be a barrier. That’s why we refurbish donated bikes, giving them a second life at affordable prices. Every sale supports our programmes for children, young people, and families — helping more people experience the freedom, health benefits, and joy of cycling.

One parent recently told us:

“I came down with my daughter on Saturday and Rachel very kindly measured her for a bike. She has now chosen a really lovely bike and we are just to wait for it to be checked over before we take it away. I cannot thank you, Rachel and Rosie more for your wonderful help and kindness. When we come to collect Molly’s bike I hope to book in for a couple of sessions for both my daughter and myself so that my daughter can become more confident.”

It’s a small moment that captures what we do best — combining kindness, skill, and opportunity to create lifelong impact.

Real Stories, Real Change

Through initiatives like our Wee Bike Library, we’re seeing real transformation:

  • 97 % of families would use the service again

  • 91 % saw improved cycling confidence

  • 87 % said the library removed a financial barrier

  • 84 % of children now use their bikes weekly

  • More than half of users say they drive less and cycle more

“My child’s first bike is from Wee Bike Library… She learnt and gained more confidence on cycling… Wee Bike Library saved me money from buying new bike.”

“Both my boys have decided to do a daily cycle together… They wouldn’t leave the house before!”

When access barriers come down, confidence and connection rise — and whole communities start to move differently.

Why this matters now

Cycling isn’t just transport. It’s a tool for wellbeing, climate action, and community connection. At a time when Scotland faces intersecting challenges — the climate crisis, rising costs, and social isolation — organisations like ours are crucial.

We bridge the gap between affordability and sustainability. We empower people to learn, grow, and connect. We keep bikes — and people — moving forward.

As one Edinburgh supporter recently shared:

“The Bike Station is excellent — a proper community hub. Great service, great people, and a real sense that what you spend goes back into doing good.”

Everyday heroes, everywhere

Every child who learns to ride. Every parent who cycles to save money and the planet. Every person who donates a bike, volunteers time, or supports our mission — they’re all part of something bigger.

Together, we’re building a movement of everyday heroes creating a healthier, more connected, and more sustainable Scotland.

And soon, we’ll be inviting you to join them. 🚲

Keep an eye on our channels — something special is coming to help even more people get on bikes, for their health, their minds, and the planet.
