From Local Pedals to National Policy: Why Community Cycling Matters More Than Ever

At The Bike Station, we believe that big change starts small — with a single journey, a single bike, a single act of repair.

While our work is firmly rooted in local communities across Edinburgh and Perth, the impact reaches far beyond. Every refurbished bike, every cycling lesson, and every free repair session supports something bigger: a vision of a healthier, fairer, more sustainable Scotland.

That’s why we embed national and regional policy goals into the heart of everything we do — because we’re not just fixing bikes. We’re helping to fix the system.

Aligned with Scotland’s National Priorities

From climate action to transport justice, Scotland has ambitious goals. Reports like the Circularity Gap Report (Zero Waste Scotland and Circle Economy) and strategies such as the National Transport Strategy 2 and Active Travel Framework lay out a future where:

  • Resources are reused and repurposed, not wasted

  • More people walk, wheel, and cycle — especially in areas underserved by public transport

  • Community organisations play a key role in reducing emissions and inequalities

We see these as more than policy objectives — they are the foundation of our day-to-day work.

A Circular Economy in Action

Every year, we refurbish and rehome hundreds of bikes giving them a new lease of life and ready for the next adventure. In 2024, for example, we recycled six tonnes of tyres and tubes and got 2,387 bikes back on the road — keeping valuable materials in circulation and helping people ride affordably.

We’re proud to be part of Scotland’s circular economy movement — one that reduces waste, lowers emissions, and builds local resilience.

Making Active Travel Accessible

Cycling should be for everyone — but right now, it isn’t. That’s why we run programmes like Shifting Gears, supporting people from underrepresented backgrounds to access bikes, learn new skills, and feel confident on the road.

We also run community-based services like the Wee Bike Library, helping families access kids bikes without the financial barrier. And we’re based in two cities — Edinburgh and Perth — where research shows that 25% and 21% of residents respectively want to drive less, but often face challenges in doing so.

Our work helps remove those barriers and puts national goals into practical motion.

Why It Matters

We’re here to show that the circular economy, active travel, and sustainable transport aren’t just ideas on paper — they’re already happening, in real places, with real people.

We’ll keep working toward a Scotland where every journey is more sustainable, more inclusive, and more connected.
