At The Bike Station, we believe every bike has a story. Some are short and simple, while others span decades, places, and generations. Recently, Ruth donated a very special bike to us — one that’s been part of her family’s adventures for nearly 50 years.
Meet Hercules.

A Bike Born in the 70s
Hercules was first bought in the 1970s by Ruth’s granny. A sturdy three-gear bike, it may not have had the latest technology, but it had something much better: resilience. With just those three gears, Hercules carried Ruth’s granny all around the Isle of Skye. From windswept coastlines to steep hills, Hercules proved that adventure is more about spirit than speed.
Rolling Down the Royal Mile
As years passed, Hercules moved onto the next adventure in Edinburgh. There, the bike became a familiar sight on the cobbles of the Royal Mile, carrying both Ruth’s granny and later Ruth herself. Every climb and descent added another layer to Hercules’ story, weaving the bike into the city’s rhythm.
A Spell in Exeter
Not content with Scottish landscapes alone, Hercules also spent time in Exeter, enjoying leisurely river rides and new surroundings. Wherever it went, Hercules offered freedom, joy, and a reliable way to explore.
Passing the Pedals On
Now, decades after its first ride, Hercules has returned to a new chapter. Ruth donated the bike to The Bike Station, where Hercules’ story isn’t ending — it’s simply shifting gears.

Why These Stories Matter
Donations like Ruth’s remind us that bikes aren’t just transport — they’re companions. They carry memories, connect generations, and open up opportunities. At The Bike Station, we’re proud to make sure no bike’s story ends too soon.
