Scotland might not be known for heatwaves, but when the sun does come out, it's time to make the most of it! Whether you're commuting, heading out on a scenic route, or dusting off your bike for the first time this year, here are our top tips for staying safe, cool, and smiling in the sunshine.

☀️ 1. Hydration is Your Best Friend
Bring more water than you think you’ll need, and sip often — not just when you feel thirsty. If you’re out for a longer ride, plan a stop to refill your bottles or grab a cool drink.
🧢 2. Dress Light (and Bright!)
Go for breathable, light-coloured clothing to stay cool and visible. Bonus points for sun-protective materials or adding reflective gear for those long sunny evenings.
🧴 3. Don’t Forget Sunscreen
Sweat-proof, water-resistant sunscreen is your cycling essential. Remember the backs of your hands, neck, and ears — they get a lot of sun exposure on a bike.
😎 4. Protect Your Eyes
A pair of sunglasses with UV protection does wonders — for your eyes and your vibe.
🛣️ 5. Take It Easy
Hot weather can make effort feel harder. Slow your pace, take breaks, and listen to your body. It’s not a race — it’s a ride!
📍 6. Plan Your Route
Stick to shaded paths or routes with water stops if you can. Canal paths, parks, and quiet routes can offer cooler alternatives to busy roads.
🚲 7. Bike Check Before You Go
Heat can affect tyre pressure and brake cables. Give your bike a quick safety check or pop into your local workshop for a tune-up.
Sunshine is rare (in Scotland) and wonderful — let’s enjoy it on two wheels! Got your own summer cycling tip or favourite sunny route? Tag us on socials or pop in to say hello. And if you're feeling the heat, remember: there’s no shame in walking part of the way or heading out early or late to beat the sun.
