At The Bike Station, we believe that every bike has a story waiting to be told, from the past, present and future. When Lionel reached out to us about his bicycle’s incredible journey, we couldn’t wait to share it with you. From Edinburgh to London, this bike wasn’t just a mode of transport—it became part of Lionel’s unforgettable adventure.

From Pollock Halls to Edinburgh Castle

Lionel’s journey with the bike began in July, 2018, when he purchased it at The Bike Station in Edinburgh. Its first stop? Pollock Halls at the University of Edinburgh, where Lionel was staying. Just a few days later, the bike made its way to one of Scotland’s most iconic landmarks: Edinburgh Castle. Lionel even managed to bring the bike inside the castle grounds when he was at the Tattoo —a true VIP experience for a two-wheeled companion!

Exploring the Edinburgh Area

Over the next few weeks, Lionel and his bike explored the stunning surroundings of Edinburgh. Together, they cycled to Queensferry to admire the Forth Bridge, rode along the Innocent Trail to Portobello Beach, and pedaled to the picturesque village of Gifford. Along the way, they stopped at Rosslyn Chapel for a photo.

A Well-Traveled Companion

The bike wasn’t just confined to Edinburgh. In August of the same year, it crossed the Forth Bridge to Dunfermline. A week later, it accompanied Lionel to the Earl of Elgin’s house and even made its way to Aberdeen’s Gordon Highlanders Museum. It was no ordinary journey—sometimes the bike traveled in style, like the time it was transported from Edinburgh to London in a band truck alongside bagpipes and drums.

Adventures in London

Once in London, Lionel reunited with the bike, what followed was a whirlwind of urban exploration, Lionel cycled in and out of London five times before ultimately passing the bike on to the family he stayed with in Clerkenwell, ensuring it would continue its journey with new riders.

More Than Just a Bike

For Lionel, the bike became a cherished part of his adventure in Scotland. In his email, he told us he’d sent another piper to buy a bike from The Bike Station last year, sharing the joy of cycling with others.
